Conversational forms vs static surveys

Both collect information. They differ in who decides the next question, how deep the answers go, and how much work it takes to read them.

Question flow

A static survey has a fixed set of questions, sometimes with branching rules that the author writes in advance. Every path has to be planned before anyone answers.

A conversational form chooses each question from the answers so far. The author sets the goal and the limits; the follow-ups are decided during the conversation.

Answer depth

Open text fields in a static survey get whatever the respondent writes first, often a word or two. A conversational form can ask once more when an answer is vague, which is where most of the useful detail comes from.

Comparability

Static surveys win on strict comparability: everyone sees identical wording. A conversational form keeps results comparable through declared fields, which every interview collects, but the follow-up wording varies by person. If your study needs identical wording, for example for a validated measurement scale, use a static survey.

Reading the results

Static surveys are fast to chart for closed questions and slow to read for open ones. Conversational forms produce more text, so they rely on analysis: per-response summaries, themes across responses, and the ability to ask questions about the data.

How to choose

  • Choose a static survey for registrations, orders, payments, files, and anything that needs identical wording.
  • Choose a conversational form when you need the reason behind an answer: churn, product feedback, research, post-event feedback.
  • Use both: a short static form for the facts, then a link to a conversation for the why.
